Giving Tree Children’s Book Drive!

This Holiday season give the gift of reading to a Native American child or family in a shelter! The Coalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women has partnered again with Shumakolowa Native Arts, to present the Giving Tree Children’s Book Drive! These books will benefit a Native American child or family spending their Holidays in a shelter.

Every year, over 80% of all Native American women and children are faced with homelessness in a local shelter, affected by domestic violence. CSVANW is committed to bringing awareness to this harrowing statistic by coordinating with Shumakolowa Native Arts and help deliver these books to a regional shelter in need.

Shumakolowa Native Arts offers a beautiful range of Pueblo and Native American book titles such as, For A Girl Becoming by Joy Harjo, Taos Pueblo Painted Stories by Johnathon Warm Day and Buffalo Bird Girl: Hidatsa Story by S.D. Nelson. These stories will provide comfort and literacy in an domestic violence shelter. Please consider donating today!

Books to be delivered to the following shelters. New Beginning Program (Farmington), Ama Doo Alchini Bighan (Chinle, Navajo Nation), Family Crisis Center (Farmington), Battered Family Services Inc (Gallup), Roberta’s Place (Grants), and the Laguna Family Shelter Program (Pueblo of Laguna)

“Nearly 80 percent of our Native women and children who are facing homelessness for the first time this holiday season are in this position as a direct result of domestic or family violence. By providing a book to a Native family facing homelessness this holiday season, you are providing an opportunity for normalcy that they may not otherwise have in a shelter.” said Deleana OtherBull, Executive Director of the Coalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women.
