CSVANW’s 5th Annual I Will Run for Her 5K Goes Virtual In an Abundance of Caution

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – October 23, 2020 – In efforts to support the health of communities during the COVID-19 pandemic the Coalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women’s (CSVANW) 5th Annual I Will Run for Her 5K goes virtual this year.

“Because of COVID, this year our event looks different,” say Angel Charley, executive director of CSVANW, “but our intention to join our community so that together we may honor the cycle-breaker, survivors, and loved ones whose lived have been affected by domestic violence remains the same.”

Participants will have two days, October 25 and 26, to complete a 5K run, jog or walk and share their run, jog or walk through social media. Participates who registered were sent a CSVANW Virtual Run 2020 t-shirt, sticker, face mask, and a selfie card for participates to fill out and share a dedication.

“Even though we are apart, we are connected” Charley says, “and we want folks to participate wherever they are.”

The annual I Will Run for Her community run is held every October in conjunction with Domestic Violence Awareness Month to promote healing and wellness through running, and to further raise awareness about domestic violence affecting tribal communities.

“I participated in the I will run for her 2019 5k because it was a great opportunity for my family and I to represent our Mothers, sisters and daughters. For them all to stay strong, resilient, and courageous for the past, present and future. I ran for my sister, mother and daughters!” says Clarissa Salt, 2019 top female runner.

“Like other participants, I participated in the 2019 I Will Run for Her 5k to show my support for the many Native women and children who have battled and continue to persevere through an imbalanced criminal justice system,” says Michael Platero, 2019 top male runner. “Coming together and making our voices heard in unity in this way is one example of how we, as Native people and allies, can overcome centuries of systemic oppression.”

Registration for swag bags is closed but you can still participate and dedicate a run, jog or walk for the I Will Run for Her virtual run on October 25 & 26, 2020. You can learn more about how to participate here.
