Local Indigenous Leaders Join Albuquerque City Council Proclamation To Bring Awareness To Domestic Violence

The Coalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women and Councilor Tammy Fiebelkorn declare October to honor survivors of domestic violence in New Mexico.

Albuquerque, NM – Tonight, City Councilor Tammy Fiebelkorn is asking the Albuquerque City Council to declare the month of October as ‘Domestic Violence Awareness Month’ at the October 3, 2022 City Council Meeting with a proclamation.

“More than four out of five Native women will experience domestic abuse in their lifetime,” said Angel Charley, executive director for the Coalition to Stop Violence Against native Women (CSVANW). “I am hopeful that the City’s dedication to remembering the tragedies of domestic violence will honor survivors and provide support in tribal communities that are healing.”

On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States which equates to more than 10 million women and men in one year.

“Domestic violence is a plague. I will continue ensuring that everyone is safe from family violence including children, animals, adults, and seniors. I hope everyone will take time this month to reach out to a survivor, learn more about prevention, and seek help when they need it,” requests City Councilor Tammy Fiebelkorn.

The proclamation will be presented to Director Angel Charley at the Monday, October 3, 2022 City Council Meeting beginning at 5:00 PM.
